A Word About Our Name – Or Lack Thereof

The quartet is often asked how we came to be known as the No Name Quartet. The answer can be simple--and it can be complicated.

On the simple side, we sang together for more than a decade without ever selecting a name. We were just four men who would sing in churches and other venues because we enjoyed singing together. And then one day a concert scheduler who was tired of having to use all four of our names started referring to us as the No Name Quartet. She even displayed posters and calendars with the new shorthand for the group, thus the new name, er, “no name” was born.

From a deeper standpoint, we like the connotation that it isn’t about us but about Him. He truly is the one worthy of all the praise. We stand with Peter in his message to the religious leaders in Acts 4:12: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” This is the Savior we love to sing about. May His name be glorified!

Mike Yocum

The No Name Quartet has been singing together for more than 20 years. Bob Jackson leads the group vocally and manages the quartet. Like the rest of NNQ, his love of the Lord and singing about him started at a young age—singing gospel songs with his dad accompanying him on the organ.

Tim Yocum is the tenor of the group. His soaring vocals and smooth tones reflect having grown up in the church, singing in choirs and just being around great music. He is the younger, and as he says “better looking” brother, of the two Yocums.

Jeff Secaur is the group’s resident crooner/baritone. He too was raised in the church, surrounded by beautiful music, and encouraged to use his musical gifts. His biggest musical influence is his father who played in a 1930’s dance band.

Mike Yocum is the older, more mature of the two brothers. His rich bass voice was nurtured by the musical influences of the old quartets that came to town for the legendary “all-night sings.” He loves singing and acting in his town’s professional summer stock theater, as well as directing Grace College’s theater program.
